Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person but most people come for between 5 and 7 sessions. Most clients report significant improvements in that time. Hypnotherapy is definitely a brief intervention and is not a treatment that lasts years and years. On the other hand, effective and lasting change can take a little time. In other words, it isn’t all just going to happen instantly so please don’t expect a one-session magic wand.

The only time we sometimes see clients on a one-off basis is for smoking cessation. See more details of the stop smoking program .

Do you have a waiting list?

Yes, we usually do have a waiting list but we will do our very best to see you as soon as we can.

Can a hypnotist make you do something you don’t want to or say something you don’t want to?

There is absolutely no evidence for this. Some stage hypnotists (entertainers) present themselves in a way that suggests they can MAKE you DO things but they really can’t. If you could make people do things with hypnosis then it would be a reasonable claim of legal defence. And it isn’t. I challenge any hypnotist anywhere in the world to make me do something I don’t want to do. It’s impossible.

Hypnosis is one of the most misunderstood things I can think of. Partly because people are used to seeing it misrepresented in the media but also because they’ve never really had it explained to them properly. On an initial session, we as hypnotherapists tend to spend quite some time helping people get a solid understanding of what it is.

Can a hypnotist manipulate you to do something you don’t want to or say something you don’t want to?

Ah, now that’s a different question!

Some people can be very manipulative. We all ultimately make our own choices but there is no doubt in my mind that you can use psychological tricks and manipulation to push people into doing things they wouldn’t normally do. But why on earth would a hypnotherapist want to do this? A stage hypnotist may want to do it to make for a great show but a hypnotherapist certainly doesn’t want his or her clients to feel manipulated.

When someone is in hypnosis they tend to feel far more empowered and able to make great decisions themselves. So choose a caring, experienced and qualified hypnotherapist and you really can’t go wrong.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Hypnosis is a completely safe and natural process. In a safe, clinical environment and working with a reputable clinician, it is really no different than a session of deep relaxation and the application of creative imagination. There is no evidence of hypnosis being dangerous especially when used by a professional therapist in an appropriate manner.

What if I can’t be hypnotised?

You can.

The problem often is that people expect hypnosis to be different from what it actually is. They expect a very strange experience like a deep unconscious sleep and it really isn’t that at all. It’s a very natural state that we all experience regularly in our day to day lives. In a therapeutic setting it’s just that bit more focused and goal-directed.

What are the potential side effects?

You could find yourself becoming more relaxed and more confident, losing weight, stopping smoking, feeling more energetic, experiencing greater feelings of health and wellbeing…

In other words, because hypnotherapy is safe and natural, the side effects tend to be very positive. For example, I have had clients successfully stop smoking and then report that they are also sleeping better. And weight loss clients often report that they are more relaxed and confident in general.

Will I be ‘put under’ hypnosis?

No. There is no ‘under’. It is another myth from the days when people really believed that a hypnotist could control you. Hypnotherapy is actually all about you being more ‘in control’. You’ll feel great, and you can come out of the state of hypnosis any time you want. You will feel empowered.

How much does each session cost?

Each session tends to last between 50 minutes and 1 hour and costs $110.

The one-off stop smoking program lasts about an hour and a half and costs $235. It includes a free follow up session if necessary, plus a CD for you to listen to at home to reinforce the work done in the session.

Do you offer evening/weekend appointments?

Yes, we have limited appointments available on some weekday evenings and Saturday mornings.  We will do our best to see you at a convenient time but these appointments can be the most popular so sometimes there is a longer wait.
